By this we mean that we teach through books of the Bible verse-by-verse. Rather than study topics or themes we choose to follow the example of the apostle Paul in Acts 20:27 and “declare to you the whole counsel of God.” We believe the best way to do this is to simply go through all of God’s Word, starting at chapter 1, verse 1 of a book and working our way to the end over the course of several weeks or months. Although this approach is different than what many people are used to, it is incredibly effective for spiritual growth. God is faithful to speak to His people through His Word and we are always amazed at how the Holy Spirit directs His Word to speak to the issues of our hearts and our present circumstances. Faith comes by hearing and hearing by the Word of God. Romans 10:17
At Calvary Chapel we take our cues for church life from the very first believers. Their spiritual lives are described in Acts 2:42 where it says, “...they continued steadfastly in the apostles' doctrine and fellowship, in the breaking of bread, and in prayers.” And this activity was what God blessed. It says later in vs 47 that “the Lord added to the church daily...” So, our goal as a group of believers is to study God’s Word (the apostles doctrine), but also to be a real church family where people know and encourage each other (fellowship), to pray together and of course worship together. We worship through taking communion (breaking bread) on the first Sunday of every month, but we also worship with music and share testimonies of what God has done for us. All these things are essential to encouraging spiritual growth and a strong faith. We need all of God’s Word and all of His work in our lives to be whole Christians.
God loves the world! He sent His Son to die for sinners that they might have eternal life through Jesus and He has commissioned His followers to preach this message. He has called His church to be salt and light in the world. Ephesians 4:12 also tells us the purpose of godly leaders is to “equip the saints for the work of the ministry.” If you are a disciple of Jesus then He has a call and purpose for your life. He has ministry--or service--for you to do in building up His body and expanding His kingdom. It might be in your home or workplace or neighborhood or church or even in another country. At Calvary Chapel we want to encourage you in God’s calling. We want to be whole Christians so we might be better used by God to help reach the whole world.
